Karate & Self-Defense

There are many benefits, mentally as well as physically to practicing the art of karate & self-defense for the senior population. Some of the physical benefits include:
  • Improved reflexes and coordination
  • Increased performance in all physical activities
  • Increased strength and stamina so you feel great all day
  • Increased flexibility and weight control for better overall fitness
  • Cardiovascular workouts ( heart and lungs ) to keep you in top shape
  • Greatly improved balance
  • Ability to defend yourself
It is no secret that staying in shape and working out improves your overall health. There are of course many ways that you can do that, but for those interested in being able to protect themselves as well as there family at the same time as staying in shape, I strongly suggest that you start our karate & self-defense program. Instructor Jose Soto, with over 50 years of experience, has much background and knowledge that will help you improve your skills, while having fun! His fun-loving spirit will have you laughing through the entire class. But no laughing matter, karate techniques are very important to being effective in self-defense tactics. For this reason, Soto will start at the beginning, with the basic techniques followed by how to put them into motion when in the presence of danger. Not only is it important to think about your health, but also to be able to protect yourself if you ever feel threatened or in danger.

Come out and join our Karate & Self-Defense class which takes place every Wednesday & Friday at the Sunshine Center (330 5th Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33701) from 5:15-6:30pm. The class is $20/month or $6/class with a City of St. Petersburg ADVANTAGE card.

10 Health Care Mistakes Seniors Make

We can all make mistakes when it comes to decisions about our health. Today, Tuesday, March 1, at the Sunshine Center in St. Petersburg, FL, Vicky Clapper of the Gulfcoast Community Center will be speaking about the 10 most common health care mistakes that seniors make. Other references to this topic include:
  1. Driving when it is no longer safe
  2. Fighting the aging process and its appearance
  3. Reluctance to discuss intimate health problems with the doctor or health care provider
  4. Not understanding what the doctor told them about their health problem or medical treatment plan
  5. Disregard the serious potential for a fall
  6. Failure to have a system or a plan for managing medicines
  7. Not having a single primary physician who looks at the overall medical plan or treatment
  8. Not seeking medical attention when early possible warning signs occur
  9. Failure to participate in prevention programs
  10. Not asking loved ones for help
reference: Elder Law Answers

It is important to know your body and to recognize when there could be a potential problem. Don't let things get to the point in which they become severe, this will only cause you more pain and suffering and cost you more money in the end. Don't delay the inevitable! Come out to the Sunshine Center today and learn how you can change how you handle your health care...it could be life or death.
